Greene County farmer Mark Tilley won the opportunity to direct a $2,500 donation from the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by Monsanto, to the Churdan public library.
The library continues to raise funds to enlarge the current facility. The 1,000 square-foot addition will allow the library to update several areas as well as to provide additional programming and space for technology. The library board and staff is working on plans and hopes to break ground early next year.
According to Tilley, he chose to support the library because as students at Paton-Churdan, his children frequently used the library and enjoyed many programs there. He wanted to make sure future students would have the same opportunity.
The purpose of the Grow Communities program is to make a positive impact in farm communities by partnering with farmers to support the local causes that are important to them. Each year, farmers enter for a chance to win a $2,500 donation that they direct to a local nonprofit.
Since the program began in 2010, farmers have directed more than $26 million across a broad cross-section of organizations that reflect the makeup and character of rural America, including food banks, emergency response organizations, schools, youth agriculture programs and many others.
